Within the research group Systems Engineering, we are searching for a Research Engineer MBSE: Control Engineering to join our research team in Leuven, Belgium, for the minimum duration of 24 months. The research activities will mainly be carried out at Siemens Industry Software N.V. located in Leuven, Belgium.


Research Engineers apply their expertise and knowledge to technical projects, products and prototypes. The research aims to find innovative, cost-effective means to improve internal and external research, methods, methodologies, and/or products and technologies. Responsibilities include developing, conducting, and evaluating new approaches to meet project/product objectives faster and more efficiently.

The focus of this position is on control engineering, here novel methodologies have to be developed, benchmarked and designed. How to combine reinforcement learning with optimal control in a Systems Engineering context is one of the general research directions.

This position reports to RTD Management. The position can be combined with a PhD program of one of SISW partner universities, in the case the candidate does not hold a PhD.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Research and technical development of prototype products and technologies.
  • Research project execution (automotive, aerospace and others).
  • Development of novel control engineering techniques.
  • Identify and keep abreast of novel technical concepts and markets.
  • Contribute to and write scientific papers and applications for patents.
  • Contribute to and write research proposals at national and international level.


  • University degree M.Sc. or higher in engineering, applied math, physics or computer science.
  • Ideally PhD with emphasis on control systems and/or machine learning
  • 2+ years of experience in control engineering.
  • Interest in automotive, aerospace and space sector.
  • Knowledge and experience in mathematically modelling engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python, Matlab  or similar)
  • Languages:
    • Fluent in English.
    • Basic knowledge of German and/or French are extra strong assets
