We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment of CFD modelling of stepped labyrinth seals in gas turbines.

The Master thesis would be carried out at a department within gas turbine R&D at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery in Finspång responsible for secondary air system and heat transfer within the turbines.

The secondary air system (SAS) in gas-turbines frequently uses labyrinth seals as flow restrictors between rotor and stator parts. In order to avoid damage when/if rotor and stator are in contact the stator part often use honeycomb cells.

In earlier diploma work the effect of honeycomb land were studied for straight seals. Also stepped seals has been studied.

This diploma work aims to study stepped seals with honeycomb and very small geometric clearances. Another aspect is what happens when grooves is created in the honeycomb due to contact with the seal fins.

Another important effect is the so called “windage” (work transfer from rotor to fluid) which seems to increase for stepped seals with honeycomb land.

This diploma work includes a short literature study on the subject but is primarily a CFD modelling of some generic stepped seals with honeycomb land.

Your Profile: 

You should have good knowledge of:

Aerodynamics and Heat Transfer.

CFD, preferably in the following programs: ANSYS or STAR-CCM+.

Gas turbine knowledge is a merit, but not a requirement.
