Local Energy Markets (LEM) are a promising concept to harvest the flexibility of small-scale energy systems at the distribution grid level and e.g. reduce costly grid expansion. Energy traded in a LEM is typically traded ahead of the delivery date. Therefore, it is necessary for the participant to forecast the expected demand or generation. Stochastic influences on a small scale, e.g. household level, induce uncertainties and forecast errors. This might lead to penalty costs for the participant for either consuming/producing less or too much energy and decreases the willingness to participate in a LEM.
In this Master-Thesis you will analyze, develop and evaluate methods to decrease the effect of load forecast uncertainties. This could for example be the aggregation of orders of several participants or the adaption of the market mechanisms.
You will start with literature research on possible methods to reduce effects of load forecast uncertainties in LEMs
Then you focus on the development of new or adaption of existing methods
Your next step will be the implementation of the methods in a LEM simulation tool
Further you will simulate the scenarios
At the end you will evaluate the performance of the investigated methods
Use your skills to move the world forward
You are a master student (f, m, d) of electrical engineering, energy engineering, mechanical engineering, energy economics, industrial engineering or equivalent and have very good grades
You are highly interested in the energy sector and the transformation of the energy system
You are experienced in programming (MATLAB, Python, C# or equivalent)
Besides you are proud of your pro-activeness and willingness to learn and to grow
Last but not least: you have a very high standard of spoken and written English
