Engineering Supervisor - Building Automation/HVAC Controls - Richmond, VA

Job Description


 

This position is for our Engineering Supervisor, who manages a local and remote team of building system design engineers. Responsibilities include project assignment, tasking, manpower/workload control, quality control, process development, and personnel management. The Engineering team is responsible for design of building automation, fire alarm, and security systems. Background in building automation is preferred. The Engineering Supervisor works with the local management team for sales and execution strategy and execution.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Direct Responsibilities:

    • Project assignment to local / remote engineering team

    • Project design status tracking and reporting to execution team/mgmt.

    • Engineering manpower planning and workload balance

    • Personnel development – technical and personal

    • Participation and contribution to local sales and execution strategy

    • Review designs for constructability, cost/risk impact, adherence to contract documents/proposal

    • Technical advisor for building automation to field, design team, and sales

  • Oversee, manage and support the below Design Engineer tasks:

    • Development of the most complex building automation/HVAC controls, fire alarm, and security designs.

    • Generation of drawings, schedules, submittals, plans, and specifications for contract and installation submittal packages to meet project specifications.

    • Generation of as-built drawings and operation & maintenance manuals for project close-out.

    • Analysis of contract documents to develop design documents, selection of products to meet design and specification intent.

    • Identification and resolution of constructability and project scope issues.

    • Development of initial system database for field installation.

    • Procurement of project materials to meet project installation schedule

    • Support of field installation team with engineering re-designs, phone support, on-site support, construction meetings, etc.

    • Support of sales team with project review and scope analysis. Participation in site investigations as necessary.

    • Mitigation of potential construction and cost problems via effective solutions in reaction to application of concepts, techniques, knowledge, or processes.

    • Display of original thinking in applying principles, theories, and concepts on a wide range of problems.

 

 

 

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education and Experience

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Extensive knowledge with HVAC and electrical systems

  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, electrical and electronic engineering as it applies to HVAC controls & Building Automation Systems

  • Strong knowledge of network types and protocols

  • Thorough knowledge of project construction environment and submittal processes

  • Proficiency of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Proficiency with Computed Aided Drafting software, in particular AutoCAD is required.

  • Proficiency with drafting and engineering drawings standards is required.

  • Successfully serves as point of authority and/or source of technical/scientific knowledge for area of expertise.

 

 

  • Develops team members through mentoring and coaching in complex subjects.

  • Demonstrates professional principles and skills.

  • Typically 10+ years of successful experience in related field and successful demonstration of key responsibilities and knowledge as presented above. Advanced degree MAY be substituted for experience, where applicable.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong self-motivator

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
