Systems Engineering Manager - Rail Automation

Job Description

Siemens Mobility is seeking to hire a System Engineering Manager for our Onboard Rail Portfolio, and we’re looking for a system/software authority as well as an interactive people manager! This role works hand and hand with the Responsible Business Manager (RBM) to understand the project-oriented portfolio strategy and ensure team alignment, adequate staffing needs are achieved, as well as mentoring and developing team members. You will coordinate day-to-day technical activities and help address issues that arise within the Project Execution (PE) System Engineering (SYS) Onboard (OB) group to ensure the appropriate technical skills are being developed and departmental, project, and customer needs are satisfied. The manager will also ensure requirements practices are followed and staff continue to drive towards excellence.

This role supports the overall team to ensure on time project delivery with the highest quality according to the PE Organization overall System Engineering Management Process (SEMP). This includes requirement analysis of customer contracts, working to build conceptual architecture, functional analysis and decomposition resulting in an architecture description. A successful candidate will be able to ensure all projects within the onboard portfolio work against agreed upon requirement and design baselines and progress to project completion with no technical nonconformance costs.

Responsibilities will include:

Technical

  • Guide system engineering activities as well as develop technical skills within the department to ensure portfolio, project, and customer needs are satisfied.
  • Ensure system engineering technical processes, procedures and best practices are established, detailed and effectively followed daily
  • Use problem solving, communication and social skills to ensure effective and efficient team operation
  • Collaborate with the Head of Systems Engineering to continuously improve overall system engineering process
  • Develop technical estimate(s) for all Onboard Portfolio bids in collaboration with the bid team and Onboard RBM
  • Regularly report on Onboard portfolio projects status to Head of Systems Engineering and other executives, as required
  • Work with Rail Automation SMEs to build, deliver, and execute projects with current portfolio as well as support URS/SRS discussion about next generation needs.
  • Work as the Product & Solution Security authority
  • Govern all project deployments to ensure aligned with Siemens strategy for reuse, product level changes as well as project level changes.

Financial

  • Ensure all bids within the portfolio are reviewed from a system engineering perspective and provide system level estimate, alert bid team of any potential pitfalls in design or requirements, product & solution security estimate, compliance statements for all requirements, as well as a conceptual level architecture to bid team.
  • Ensure projects are aligned with budget and schedules as agreed upon during PM080 handover from Bid team
  • Identify capital needs to support development and maintenance of the overall capital budget
  • Collaborate with project System Managers in Project (SMiPs) & Commercial Project Managers (CPM) to understand resource needs and create overall team forecast and demands

Personnel

  • Handle the day-to-day SMiPs working on Siemens Onboard solutions (e.g., ACSES, ATC, etc.)
  • Define, monitor and lead team’s performance through organizationally aligned targets
  • Define, monitor and develop team’s development through technical training, mentoring and coaching
  • Conduct performance evaluations and recommended salary adjustments, progressions and promotions
  • Coach on processes and engineering skills with new hires and in developmental areas with others, as appropriate
  • Provide mentorship on contacts within the Siemens organization

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • BS degree in an appropriate engineering or science related field required, MS degree preferred
  • A minimum 10 years of experience in the Systems Engineering function
  • Excellent understanding of System & Software architecture, design processes, and standards (e.g., IEEE-1220, IEEE 1558, IEE 15288)
  • Understanding of ACSES and/or rail automation domain a plus.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • ~25% travel depending on project and organizational needs
