Material Handling Project Manager

Job Description

Siemens Logistics LLC is seeking a Senior Project Manager in support of our Postal Automation business operation. The market focus for this role will be Mailing industry with Parcel Processing Systems. This position will report to the Operations Director of Siemens Logistics Postal Automation division to guide project/program management activities (defining scheduling, budget, risk, change, opportunity and resource management activities) for very complex projects or programs surrounding the installation of material handling systems. Specific technology areas include parcel singulation and sortation solutions for Postal, eCommerce or retail applications.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, fully understanding customer scope of work; managing the project and coordinating all work packages, internal staff, and external sub-contractors; primary interface with the customer and with senior management. This position will also guide the technical review of system design and documentation and develop continuous improvement plan and may develop client relationship and sales opportunities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Overall management of the customer requirements, deliverables, design, development, integration, installation and commissioning of material handling systems

  • Overall management of the project schedule, cost and coordinating all work packages.

  • Preempts potential problems and provides effective solutions in reaction to application of concepts, techniques, knowledge, or processes.

  • Deals with change management throughout the course of the project and reassesses the resource requirements for the project

  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge in field of specialization or multiple disciplines to the successful completion of complex assignments.

  • Understands customer operations and can speak to how the systems operate to any and all stakeholders - internal corporate management, customers and internal teams.

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of organization's business practices and issues faced and contributes to problem resolution of those issues.

  • Review and manage all aspects of project financials.

  • Traveling to customer sites for program review meetings, design reviews and system acceptance test as required

Required Knowledge/Skills/Education

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent is required; advanced degree is preferred

Experience in complex parcel/package processing automation systems design and development is preferred.  The qualified candidate should have an understanding of and be familiar with:

  • Parcel processing automation equipment (conveyors, extendable conveyors, sorters, automatic inductions, manual/semi-auto inductions, singulators, aligners, merges, scanners, dimensioners, weigh-in-motion scales, belted turns, accumulators, queues, slides, chutes, etc.)

  • Parcel processing automation controls and electrical (power distribution, motor control panels, field bus communications, programmable logic controllers, I/O modules, variable frequency drives, photosensors, encoders, graphical display units, safety devices, etc.)

  • Parcel processing automation systems key performance/design parameters and associated terminology (throughput, sort accuracy, min/max/average pitch, min/max/average gap, parcel/package size/weight spectrum, tracking, barcode recognition, optical character recognition, read/error rates, finalization rate, etc.)

  • Parcel processing automation systems operational processes and terminology (vehicle/trailer loading/unloading, primary sortation, secondary sortation, dispatch, sort plans, operational tours/windows, corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, etc.)

PMP Certification Desired.

Travel Requirements:  25%


Typically 8+ years of successful experience in related field and successful demonstration of Key Responsibilities and Knowledge as presented above including 5+ years of experience leading Logistics Systems Projects and/or large industrial/construction projects
