Digital Controls Engineering Technician
Siemens Energy is seeking a DCS Controls Engineering Technician, with a specialty in power generation and engineering process solution, to join our team in Alpharetta, GA. This position will focus on implementing controls solutions within our Systems Engineering and Digitalization portfolio. Our mission is to achieve maximum unit availability in a safe, efficient, cost effective manner within all environmental and regulatory standards for our clients. This person will report to the Service Engineering Manager for Systems and Digitalization.
Work with a niche project team to design and implement controls solutions using the SPPA-T3000 within a Power Plant Environment.
Aid in crafting site-specific control logic from customer specifications, SAMA diagrams, logic diagrams, and reverse-engineering of ladder-logic, or existing code.
Perform plant integration and provide assistance for loop checks of new and existing instruments and commissioning of engineered control logic.
Aid in performing on-site studies to determine cost benefits of startup optimization, heat rate optimization, startup sequencing, alarm and manual operator intervention reduction at power generation facilities.
Aid in perform efficiency calculations for Plant Heat Rate, Boiler Efficiency, combustion turbine efficiency.
Aid in designing, developing and testing engineering modifications of solutions.
Perform testing of 3rd party communication links and protocols as part of the overall technical solution.
Perform and track changes for complex new software designs, processes, or design changes to meet specified requirements
Assist with design, implementation and management of improvement projects related to the DCS platform
Work with Supervisors, Maintenance, Engineering and Operations to plan, procure and document maintenance activities
Maintaining strict alignment to site specific safety rules and regulations
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
A.S./A.A. in electrical/electronic field and a Minimum of 5 years of technician experience in industrial control environment. Or 8+ years of work experience as a controls engineering technician on power generation equipment or maintaining an electric power station or similar industry.
50-60% Travel will be required.
Must be willing to submit any and all required information and documents to pass additional client specific background checks for our power plant customers.
Knowledge of electrical safety standards.
Must be self-managed and a team player.
Strong communication (verbal and written) and relationship skills with engineering, customers, vendors and contractors with a strong focus on customer service.
Knowledge of Boilers and/or HRSG controls is required
Knowledge of Measurement devices (Press, Flow, Temperature, Moisture, Vibration, Speed, Density, Level) and ability to configure field instrumentation equipment
Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI)-Knowledge of Ethernet Communications Equipment
Ability to read English and understand technical manuals, classroom materials, electrical and mechanical drawings relate to site equipment.
Ability to use a PC and learn associated software – i.e. databases, spreadsheets, and operating systems, MS office suite applications especially Excel.
Ability to explanations and clarify information necessary to interpret and evaluate complex specifications, performance characteristics or other technical data.

Experience with the following will set you apart:
Programmable knowledge of SPPA-T3000 control systems.
Programmable knowledge of automatic generation controls.
Process knowledge of steam turbine controls
Testing knowledge of 3rd party communication links
Knowledge of coal optimization, combined cycle optimization, heat rate efficiency, emissions controls
Technical/Commercial knowledge of Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP)
Electric utility operational experience
Proficiency in Spanish
Normal power plant environment and/or out-of-doors work environment.
Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, climb stairways, ladders.
Must be prepared to work extended hours; varied/rotating shifts with weekend and holiday work as the need arises by schedules, workload and project conditions.
Respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; “On call” status will periodically be required.
Ability to work in mentally stressful environments including being able react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, and working with hand tools.
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.…steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
Have the ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals as well as assorted colors.
