Offshore & Marine Center (OMC) is Siemens’ technology center for power systems for marine vessels such as passenger ferries, fishing boats and offshore vessels. We are pioneers in the field of low-emission solutions with our battery solutions which are developed and produced at OMC.  The innovation process continues, and we are searching for skilled and curious students to accompany us on our path to electrify the offshore and marine sectors.

Summer Internship in the R&D Department at Siemens Offshore and Marine Center

Application:

The application should include the following:

The working languages are Norwegian and English.

As a summer intern at Offshore & Marine Center, you will have the opportunity to work with varied and challenging tasks in a supportive, innovative and inspiring R&D environment. For the summer of 2020, we offer the following internship projects in the Technology Department at Offshore & Marine Center in Trondheim:

Project A:

Aim: Implement an FPGA-based oscilloscope.

Outline:

  1. Establish a test framework.
  2. Implement the FPGA IP block.
  3. Test and verify the solution.
  4. Present the project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student having completed three or four years of studies in cybernetics, computer science or a related area.
  • Experience with HDL, C, Matlab, Python and Git.
  • Understanding of FPGA and embedded software.

Project B:

Aim: Set up a real-time operating system in parallel with Linux on a multicore processor.

Outline:

  1. Set-up of embedded Linux with AMP (asymmetric multiprocessing).
  2. Set-up of FreeRTOS.
  3. Test of the system.
  4. Presentation of the project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student having completed three or four years of studies in cybernetics, computer science or a related area.
  • Experience with FreeRTOS, embedded Linux, ARM, Git.
  • Understanding of embedded software.

Project C:

Aim: Transfer an existing power electronics application from processor to FPGA.

Outline:

  1. Gain understanding of the simulation model.
  2. Adapt the simulation model for FPGA code generation.
  3. Test.
  4. Present the project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student having completed three or four years of studies in cybernetics, computer science, power electronics or a related area.
  • Experience with HDL, C, Matlab, Python and Git.
  • Understanding of embedded software.

Project D:

Aim: Develop printed circuit boards for our BlueDrive portfolio based on existing prototypes.

Outline:

  1. Write a requirement specification for the PCB.
  2. Make a schematic circuit diagram.
  3. Make a PCB design.
  4. Exchange with the PCB producer.
  5. Test the PCB.
  6. Write the necessary documentation.
  7. Present the project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student in electronics.
  • Experience with printed circuit board design.

Project E:

Aim: Test the possibility of applying infrared temperature measurement to the surface of power rails at high voltages.

Outline:

  1. Write a function specification.
  2. Search for components suitable for the application.
  3. Define a solution for wireless communication with the control system.
  4. Evaluate the possibility of power supply through energy harvesting.
  5. Make a schematic circuit diagram and perform simulations.
  6. Present the project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student in electronics.
  • Experience with printed circuit board design.

Project F:

Aim: Develop a digital twin of a battery ferry including the charging station and grid connection. This will be realized with Matlab Simulink as a complete three phase power system. The model will be subject for various use cases, e.g. optimization of system design in project sales.

Outline:

  1. Definition of detailed scope and user interface
  2. Establish Matlab Simulink models for various components and sub systems
  3. Implement user interface for the complete simulation model

Desired Qualifications:

·       Student having completed three or four years of studies in cybernetics, electric power systems or other relevant related area

  • Experience with Matlab Simulink

Project G:

Aim: Participate in laboratory testing of a new inverter that is under development.

Outline:

  1. Set up a test plan
  2. Set up test equipment and practical preparations
  3. Participate in testing
  4. Responsible for test logs
  5. Analyze test data and write test report
  6. Perform simulations in Matlab Simulink to verify parts of the test

7.       Present the project

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student having completed three or four years of studies in electric power systems or other relevant related area.
  • Interest for practical laboratory work
  • Experience with Matlab Simulink

Project H:

Aim: Big data analysis from battery systems

Outline:

  1. Analysis of large data volume
  2. Evaluate the data quality
  3. Develop algorithms / methods for automatic data analysis and evaluation
  4. Present project results

Desired Qualifications:

·       Student having completed three or four years of studies in cybernetics, electric power systems or other relevant related area

  • Experience with Matlab, Python, time series database
  • Interest for big data analysis
