Job Description:


The Industrial Engineer:  Packaging and Conveyance has the primary responsibility to ensure that all supplier/vendor, warehouse, and production material packaging and conveyance is defined to support a low volume, high mix production operations utilizing Lean Methodologies.

Other responsibilities include:

• Define and implement the overall material packaging specifications for groups of materials and incorporate them into the standard purchasing policies and supplier agreements.

• Develop and implement material packaging standards and specifications from supplier to warehouse, warehouse to production, and supplier to production for manufacturing materials and components.

• Design and develop material packaging and material packaging specifications based on size, material composition, usage, and travel distance including dunnage requirements for small, medium and large manufacturing material and components.

• Define and implement a material conveyance system for production components including supplier to warehouse, warehouse to production, and supplier to production for manufacturing materials and components

• Review and approve suppliers packaging (single use).

• Design, review and approve returnable crates.

• Coordinate and communicate technical information to and from all levels of the organization including suppliers, project managers, production team members, and operations managers including batch sixe, kits and to reflect all requirements in POs to suppliers.

• Developing department and organizational procedures and standards to improve business, production, and warehouse transactions such as picking, putting, material staging and material conveyance.

  • Required education and focus: High school diploma or GED

• Required experience:  At least 3 years of experience designing material packaging and setting up packaging standards for a manufacturing operation.  (e.g. rail, aviation, naval, heavy equipment).

• Required travel:  5%

• Other Requirements:

o Experience reading engineering drawings and gaining an understanding of manufacturing process requirements such as job sequence, workflow, fixture requirements, cell layouts, accessibility, ergonomics, time standards, etc.

o Firm project management skills , including developing project plans, timelines / schedules, budgets, proposed layouts, resource requirements, calculating ROI, etc.

o Practical knowledge of the lean tool box and ability to utilize lean principles to reduce waste.

o A history of “hands-on” approach to problem solving and countermeasure implementation within own areas of responsibility.

o Demonstrated knowledge of the structure and make up of component packaging for steel, fiber glass, plastic, electrical, paint, and final assembly components.

o Demonstrated understanding of material delivery concepts and material delivery carts for warehousing and its impact from supplier to end user.

o Experience using a Warehouse Management System such as Dove Tree and JD Edwards.

o Experience with cycle counting, picks, put-away, receiving and inspection processes, material review board (MRB), and Non-Conforming Material (NCR) processes.

o A history of driving projects in very adverse conditions.


Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

• Preferred education and focus: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering highly preferred.

• Six Sigma Master Black Belt / Six Sigma Black Belt / Lean Expert Certification

• Other Preferences:

o Practical experience in Customer Service / Maintenance / After Market businesses and technologies within the rail industry preferred.

o Practical experience using complex Factory Planning Methods such as defining high level manufacturing plans, identifying / analyzing new technologies required, creating a value stream analysis, performing total space needs analysis, performing total capacity needs analysis, implementation planning, etc. preferred.

o Practical experience developing technology roadmaps for a range of automation options for material conveyance with roller conveyors and flow racks, tugging train conveyance systems, parent child material cart concepts, lifting and tilting devices, automated guided vehicles, and automated guided carts.

o Practical experience transferring technical knowledge, manufacturing knowledge, and proprietary technologies from lead factories to market factories preferred.

o Practical experience training others on Lean topics, facilitating Lean improvement activities, leading lean improvement activities (KAIZEN) within a warehouse and material logistics areas.

o Practical experience utilizing and implementing lean methods and tools such as 5s, 7 Types of Waste, 8-Step Practical Problem Solving (root cause analysis), Yamazumi Methods, Flow, Total Flow, Kanban, Value Stream Mapping and Design / Process Flow Diagrams, ABC-XYZ Analysis,  and Lean Shop Floor Management Model.

o Practical experience coaching and training staff at all levels and functions of the organization including Lean in Production, Lean in Engineering, Lean in Quality, Lean in Procurement / Purchasing / Supply Chain and Lean at the Supplier.

o Knowledge of MRP / ERP / WMS systems is highly desired.

o Bi-lingual German and English is a plus.

o Bi-Lingual Spanish and English is a plus.
