Siemens Healthineers is developing a major new platform and has established a start-up environment within Berkeley to contribute to this major initiative.
Siemens Healthineers are currently seeking an experience Systems Engineer to contribute to new platform development within their Molecular Diagnostics Business. Contributions are expected at the individual level. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Capable of integrating requirements from the various stakeholders and have ability to balance the needs of cost, quality and time-to-market.
This role will work to understand, develop, and where necessary troubleshoot multiple steps in a molecular diagnostic (sample prep plus PCR) system. This system will take a variety of input sample types, extract relevant biological material, run a PCR test on the material, and analyze resulting data. In order to develop the system, we seek to model each step in the process, and understand the effectiveness of and variation in each step. Some steps are biological, some are mechanical, some are chemical, some are electrical, some are implemented in software.
A good hire will be strong and comfortable in their understanding of some of these steps and confident in their ability to learn more where necessary and desired. As most of the activities for this role will be model-building and testing of the instrument we’re developing against the model, strength in formal methods for modelling and analysis will be helpful – this could be programming languages, MATLAB, Excel, Simulink, pen and paper.
Professional experience should include 3-7+ years working with at least some of: cell lysis and DNA extraction, sample purification, PCR assay development, DNA extraction, PCBA design and debug, mathematical modelling of biological processes, mechanical and thermal design.
As this is a very broad role, relevant academic experience could be gained in any engineering physical science discipline and most of the biological sciences. In particular: chemical engineering, systems biology, bioengineering, molecular and cell biology.

The engineer /scientist will support the development of detailed requirements, engineering specifications, verification and validation , and supporting regulatory submissions of these devices.
