Position Overview


This role is a leadership technical role in the areas of algorithm and software development applied to molecular diagnostics employing PCR. This person should be a recognized expert in this area. The candidate should be able to prototype analytical frameworks and deploy to “release worthy” software modules and subsystems in support of corporate and industry quality guidelines such as FDA in support of Class II and Class III clinical tests. The role includes defining an analytical and quantitation software framework to support ultra-fast analysis of hundreds or results over hundreds gene targets. We expect to deliver performance improvements orders of magnitude above the present SOA and high performance analytical software will be a key enabling technology.


  • Leads the analysis, evaluation and planning for methods of approach, and organizes means to achieve the solution to highly complex problems.
  • Designs and leads the testing or investigations pertaining to the development of the most complex new designs, methods, materials, or processes and investigates possible application of results.
  • Leads the development of reports, charts, graphs, and other documents and makes recommendations.
  • Reviews and approves related inputs such as experimental reports, analysis and specifications prepared by technical support personnel.
  • Leads the delivery of specifications and directions to team members, suppliers, outside consultants and development partners.
  • Participates in FMEA, worst case analysis and verification/validation of product/design.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Physics.
  • 10 + years of experience modeling of the PCR process including developing tools to quantitate the PCR.
  • Track record of contributing to commercially successful products.
  • Expertise developing algorithms to associate assay specific performance with mathematical models.
  • Creativity and insight into modeling process as demonstrated through patents or groundbreaking products.
  • Expertise developing robust analytical software applied to quantitative PCR.
  • Experience with deconvolution and multi-parameter melt analysis algorithms.
  • Experience coupling analytical software to automated PCR processes.
  • Experience with Visual C++, C#, .NET, Windows Forms and WPF.
  • Experience with Windows DLLs.
  • Experience with unit testing.
  • Experience with a standard software archiving system.
  • Experience with a standard bug tracking system.
  • Experience interfacing with software test group.
  • Hands-on experience ramping up designs in manufacturing including design and delivery of manufacturing test fixtures and calibration systems.
  • Experience with “green-field” design challenges.
  • Capable of producing succinct documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and in project teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Able to express technical ideas in a group setting.
  • Able to comprehend and comment on technical ideas in a group setting.
  • Given an ill-defined task, capable of defining and implementing the appropriate solution.
  • Flexible coding style to enhance group consistency.
  • Strong ability to problem solve, both defining the problem and ability to demonstrate solutions compatible with business objectives.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • Understanding of firmware and real-time issues.
  • Experience with digital PCR.
  • Strong statistical analysis – modeling capabilities.
  • CANopen and USB standards.
  • Experience with image processing.
  • Experience in development of products in a life sciences or regulated (CE-IVD, FDA) diagnostic environment is highly  desirable.
  • Desire to join a start-up effort within a major multi-national corporation.
  • Able to draw on first principles to figure out effective solutions.
