Position Overview

The Automation Engineer is a member of the global molecular sales organization based in Berkeley CA., reporting to the head of Workflow Solutions and Spontaneous Applications, and will work closely with the molecular R&D team to transfer novel prototype solutions into the formal development process, and oversee formal validation activities. As such, the Automation Engineer will be required to thoroughly document and communicate all project details via requirements, specifications, and rationales, enabling the efficient and complete transfer of design and facilitating the rapid release of formal validated solutions.


The Automation Engineer is responsible for assessing and modeling unique laboratory needs on an individual customer basis and rapidly developing novel automated molecular testing solutions ranging from new automation features and/or functions to the integration of new diagnostic tests. In addition, will be required to document, implement, and train internal and external customers in the use and support of these customized solutions. This role demands significant experience in automation engineering, as well as a holistic mindset and intimate technical familiarity with Molecular Diagnostic System Hardware, Software, Biochemistry, and User Experience.

In this role, the Automation Engineer will work directly with customers and dedicated regional representatives to capture and define individual laboratory testing needs, design and propose systemic schemas for meeting those testing needs, and, where applicable, develop novel automation solutions for facilitating customer testing demands.  The Automation Engineer will be required to travel globally to work with customers and local members of the sales and support teams during the project design and proposal phase, as well as the implementation and training phase, representing the global organization as the Molecular systems workflow and automation expert. 

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of experience in an area of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field OR Master’s Degree with 2+ years of related experience
  • Liquid handling automation engineering experience with Hamilton/Tecan systems
  • Systemic understanding and expertise troubleshooting and product development
  • Demonstrated expertise in rapid prototype development and implementation
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and data analysis skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills in a business partner and customer environment

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • Python, r, .net C# coding experience
  • Solidworks, 3D CAD experience
  • IT/Cloud experience
  • LIMS/LIS experience
  • Multilingual experience
