The Energy Management Digital Grid Business Unit of Siemens is looking for a highly qualified and upbeat Software Developer.

Position Overview

This position is in the Transmission and Distribution Network Applications department of the Siemens Digital Grid Software and Services group. The department is responsible for developing and delivering applications for:
  • Analysis and management of electric utility networks in real-time operations.
  • Training simulators for training operators on the use of Energy Management System and Distribution Management System and on operational system events.
  • Management of the data and models required by the EMS, DMS and MMS systems.
As a part of a successful team, you will contribute to the design, implementation and testing of software changes to applications that simulate T&D networks in a real-time operations Energy Management System (EMS), Distribution Management Systems, and Energy Market Management System. These applications include:
  • State Estimation (transmission or distribution)
  • Power Flow (transmission or distribution)
  • Contingency Analysis Optimal Power Flow Voltage Stability
  • Dynamic Stability Short Circuit Calculations
  • Operator Training Simulator
  • Micro Grid Control and Optimization.


Overall responsibilities of the position are to perform design and implementation of complex application enhancements to meet client’s specific needs. Additionally, you will have responsibility to test, tune and make operational the application at the client real-time operations control centers. Presentations of technical findings and developments are required as part of the job responsibilities.

Specific responsibilities for the position include:

  • Development of the functional description of new features
  • Design of those features by codification of power system theory and power flow based algorithms into a software design
  • Implementation of software using suitable software technology
  • Extensions to database and user interface in support of the new features
  • Completes software test for complex modules under development, and executes complex test specifications
  • Obtains quality solutions with the client data and models Validate results and ensure reliable execution in real-time operations
  • Deploy and obtain acceptance of the applications at the client site

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

What you will need to know and have done to be successful?
  • MSEE or PhD in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on Power Systems Analysis or a BSEE with a minimum 2 years of experience in the development of real-time power systems operations software applications
  • Academic training or practical experience in the theoretical aspects of transmission and/or distribution power flow and state estimation, voltage and/or dynamic stability, contingency analysis, optimal power flow, short circuit calculations
  • Academic or practical training in the use of either Fortran, C, C++ or Java
  • Academic or practical training in the use of either Perl or Python
Willingness to travel 5% time dictated by projects needs


Step to the front of the pack if you have:
  • Optimization theory
  • Control theory
  • Micro Grid control and optimization
  • Extra consideration given for experience and familiarity with modeling of power system networks
  • Experience with Oracle database technology
  • A minor degree or extended coursework and/or training in Computer Science
