Engineering Intern in Systems Engineering (New Product Development) -FLANDERS, NJ
The Siemens Healthineers Lab Diagnostics Systems Engineering organization is focused on the development of automated medical devices for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) working with infectious diseases, oncology, cardiac markers, fertility testing, thyroid function, clinical chemistries and other clinical applications. From an engineering standpoint these medical devices rely on precision mechatronics, robotics, fluid delivery systems and thermal controls to allow for the accurate and precise reporting of patient assay results.
The Systems Engineering team is responsible for the integration, design space characterization, and verification of immunoassay, clinical chemistry and sample handling systems for all new lab diagnostic development projects. With a strong product ownership mindset, the System Engineer influences systems architecture, design and reliability in the product development process. In performing these responsibilities, the System Engineer bridges all the disciplines of design engineering to assay development and ensures a system’s overview of product development. System Engineers have been hired by our organization from a broad range of formal engineering and educational backgrounds spanning biomedical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering.
This Engineering Intern position is open at our Flanders, New Jersey site. The Systems Engineering organization will also have Engineering Intern positions open at our other two sites at Tarrytown, New York and Newark, Delaware.
Responsibilities of the System Engineering Intern in New Product Development
With direction and mentorship from Senior Engineers, the Engineering Intern works closely with Systems Engineering team members to learn immunoassay and clinical chemistry subsystem and higher level overall system functionalities. Specifically, the Engineering Intern’s responsibilities include:
Design Characterization & Feasibility
- Assist in the solution of complex technical issues by troubleshooting, determining root cause, and then proposing design modifications.
Integration & Verification Testing
- Support the creation of test plans and protocols to effectively test designs
- Assist in the evaluation and analysis of system design and assay performance test data
- Review system & assay performance test data and compare to established acceptance criteria.
- Write clear data-driven technical summaries and test reports.
Completion of 2nd or 3rd year of engineering studies
Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of integrated cross-functional team
