Position Overview


Siemens Healthcare Laboratory (SHL) and Siemens Molecular Diagnostics headquarters are located in Berkeley, California. Our vision at SHL is to save lives by rapidly moving new in vitro diagnostic technologies and assays into clinical use.


Our mission within SHL R&D is to develop laboratory tests to support a new generation of therapies that will improve patient care in ways never before possible.


In order to achieve these goals, we will fully utilize decades of assay development experience and the unique resources available through our companion diagnostics development organization and global reference laboratory.




This Senior Staff Scientist, reporting to the Head of R&D and Technology, will lead successful LDT and IVD assay development programs.


Managing teams, training and mentoring scientists, solving complex challenges, maintaining laboratory infrastructure, and effective technical communications are all key responsibilities.


The successful candidate will also support pharmaceutical industry partnering proposals, generate leads for new business opportunities, and be responsible for both internal and external scientific collaborations.


Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience


Well established expertise in assay development is required.


Demonstrated knowledge of the medical applications of laboratory tests and their validation is preferred. Areas of specialization in infectious disease, oncology, neurology, cardiovascular health and metabolic disease are applicable.


Practical experience in biomarker discovery, assay prototyping, and optimization of assays is particularly important. Additional expertise in antibody development, conjugation chemistry, protein purification, proteomics, and mass-spectrometry are of interest.


Establishing and maintaining relationships with business partners, interactions with suppliers, and coordinating academic or clinical collaborations are also important skills.


A working knowledge of clinical laboratory testing applied to diagnosis, selection of patients for therapy, optimizing dosage, monitoring response or safety testing is an advantage.


Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience


Previous work in IVD product development as a member of a product development core team is preferred.


Approximately 10-20% travel may be required.


B.S. or advanced degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, or related discipline is required. 10+ years of relevant experience is required and typically requires more.  Also typically requires advanced education. An advanced degree with post‐doctoral work may substitute for a portion of required working experience in the IVD or clinical laboratory industry.
