Job Description:

SENIOR STAFF PRODUCT ENGINEER (Systems Engineering in New Product Development)
 
Position Overview
The Systems Engineering organization is focused on the development of automated medical devices for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) working with infectious diseases, oncology, cardiac markers, fertility testing, thyroid function, clinical chemistries and other clinical applications. From an engineering standpoint these medical devices rely on precision mechatronics, robotics, fluid delivery systems and thermal controls to allow for the accurate and precise reporting of patient assay results.
 
As part of the Siemens Healthineers Lab Diagnostics Systems Engineering team, the Senior Staff Product Engineer (also referred to as Senior Staff Systems Engineer) will be responsible for the integration, design space characterization, and verification of systems for assigned new lab diagnostic development projects. The Senior Staff Systems Engineer will lead key business new product development projects and for each of these projects, will be responsible for ensuring that the system as-designed meets its intended functional and performance characteristics.
The Senior Staff Product Engineer position is open at our Tarrytown, NY site with travel (up to 25%) to our other two sites in Newark, Delaware and Flanders, New Jersey.
 
The position reports to the Head of Systems Engineering (SICV) within the Design Engineering function of the Global Engineering Organization (GEO).
 
Responsibilities of Senior Staff Product Engineer:
  • The Senior Staff Systems Engineer will be assigned to specific new product development project(s) and be responsible for ensuring that the new product and its system as-designed meets its intended functional and performance characteristics. 
  • Work closely with cross-functional design development team members, technical product ownership team and system architectural team to ensure that the product definition (inclusive of requirements, architecture and interfaces) is appropriate for the intended product.
  • Co-own the product system integration strategy with the Chief Engineer and System Architect
  • Drives and defines the integration plan by engaging and working collaboratively with Chief Engineer, Functionality Integration Leaders (FILs), Software Developers, and Subsystem Technical Leaders (SSTLs)
  • Own the definition of the product system characterization strategy
  • Provide technical guidance to systems engineering team members to drive the development of systems design concepts to meet clinical chemistry and immunoassay performance requirements
  • Own the definition and execution of the product system verification strategy
  • Provides oversight and approval over the execution of the integration, characterization and verification strategy via plans and protocols
  • As key product owner in Agile Scrum for assigned project(s), establish a communication plan with Chief Engineer, functional management leadership, and Scrum Master to drive technical direction of project during sprint planning and reflect prioritized product backlog to changing business needs.
  • Be the Systems focal to interface with Projects Management to provide detailed schedule inputs for integration, characterization and verification deliverable updates and build plans/strategies.
  • Work closely with Chief Engineer and Leader of System Engineering Best Practices to drive and implement new documentation and review processes to improve technical discipline and rigor during integration, characterization and verification.
  • Anticipate potential problems that may impact system performance  and develop risk mitigation plans
  • Drive FMEA and System Design Risk analysis discussions, engage key stakeholders and ensure systems-level implications are understood.
  • Work closely with Chief Engineer, FILs and Subject Matter Experts to identify solutions to complex technical issues by troubleshooting, determining root cause, and then proposing design modifications as they pertain to lab diagnostic device system & assay performance
  • Write & review data-driven technical summaries and test reports
  • Assure compliance to all verification and integration quality procedures and policies of product development
  • Oversees procedures pertaining to:
    • system integration
    • prototype configuration management during system verification
    • design verification and traceability
    • product risk management
    • design transfer
  • Collaborate with all Design and Commercial Product Engineering teams
  • Demonstrate Systems Engineering best practices

    Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • B.S in Engineering, Computer Science or Biological Sciences required
  • 12+ years working experience in Systems Engineering in new product development
  • Significant work experience in the FDA regulated medical device industry  
  • Skilled in systems thinking with a broad range of knowledge and experience in systems requirements, integration, verification and design transfer
  • Strong grasp of engineering fundamentals and how to apply across hardware/software platforms
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on large cross-functional teams working across sites
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Learning mindset and clear thinker
 
Desired Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • Work experience in the medical device industry
  • Experience with thermal control and/or robotics a plus
  • Six Sigma DFSS training and Agile / Scrum training
