Blade Design Loads & Controls Engineer

Position Overview

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is the leading manufacturer of offshore wind turbines with 11GW of installed capacity since 1991.

 

The Boulder R&D Center for Blade Design is composed of a multi-disciplinary group of engineering experts in aerodynamics, acoustics, structures, loads, and controls, who work concurrently to design new blades and develop new blade technologies. Responsibilities

As a Blade Design Loads & Controls engineer, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Optimize wind turbine controller behavior during blade design projects
  • Analyze impact of controller behavior on turbine loads through aeroelastic simulations
  • Identify design-driving load cases and propose ideas to increase energy production and decrease loads
  • Contribute to the development of analysis and reporting tools for turbine loads simulations
  • Mentor other load engineers on controller theory, behavior and tuning practices
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of engineers in a global organization


Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

Blade Design Loads & Controls engineers are required to possess the following:

  • 3+ years of experience working with control laws, controller development, or controller tuning
  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, and FORTRAN
  • Strong interest and natural curiosity for wind turbines loads and controls
  • Analytical skills, self-motivation to achieve, and emotional intelligence to work and thrive in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and a track record working in teams

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

Blade Design Loads & Controls Engineers are desired to possess the following:

  • Experience with wind turbine controller design and tuning
  • Experience in structural dynamics and/or aeroelastic modeling
  • Experience with numerical methods for large data set processing, visualization, and reporting
