Job Description:

The Technology Field Future of Automation drives research and innovation in the field of Automation globally. Automation is one essential pillar in the corporate strategy of Siemens.

This Technology Field is a major contributor to several CCTs, especially Future of Automation and Autonomous Robotics.

Activities include research on new developments, predevelopment to connect research results with our industry specific domains, and technology transfer to the Business Units. Convincing the Business Units of our competencies and results is key to technology transfer and to securing our technology position.

The head of the Technology Field oversees the budget of all Division-funded, government-funded and centrally funded projects in his / her Technology Field. He/she defines the technology strategy of the unit and represents CT to international research partners worldwide, as well as to our internal collaboration partners in the Business Units.


  • 170 employees worldwide, including several Senior Managers

  • 13 Research Groups covering technology in Automation Engineering, Automation Runtime, Autonomous Systems & Control

Areas of Responsibility


Strategy and management

  • Identify new or white space technologies especially those which may cause a paradigm shift in Siemens business. Assessment of risks and opportunities of the identified technologies. Definition and implementation of an appropriate research strategy.  
  • Planning and controlling the TFs' budgets (incl. proportion of central funds and Division funded projects) to ensure technology expertise at CT and transfer of technology into Siemens products and solutions.
  • Development and implementation of the TF strategy in alignment with the CT strategy; strategic positioning and planning of respective TF (mid / long term) incl. technology portfolio management
  • Management and implementation of technology roadmaps
  • Ensures optimal global footprint for his technology field
  • Project acquisition in alignment with CT processes
  • Global presence in key regions and with a focus on developing a stronger footprint in emerging economies.

Communities, Contacts:

  • Relationship management with assigned Siemens Divisions on a strategic level and with the BU CTOs/CEOs, VPs, heads of R&D and experts in order to represent CT at the assigned divisions and to exchange information about technological strategies and acquire new cooperation projects

People management (in regions in alignment with in-country managers)

  • Technical leadership, functional management  and coaching of Research Group leaders
  • Performance management and talent development: e.g. target setting, performance evaluation and competency development, succession pipeline
  • Appointment of Research Group Leaders and Principal Key Experts

Required Experience:

  •  Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Engineering Required
  • Minimum of 12 years work experience in various developmental functions
  • 5-7 years leadership experience in R&D environment
  • Long term experience in collaboration with international teams.
