Position Overview

 

A System Engineering Manager for our Office Portfolio is both an system/software expert as well as a manager.  This role works hand and hand with the Responsible Business Manager (RBM) to understand the portfolio strategy and ensure team alignment, adequate staffing needs are achieved, as well as mentoring and developing team members.  In this role, you will coordinate day-to-day technical activities and help address issues that arise within the Project Execution (PE) System Engineering (SYS) Office (OF) group to ensure the appropriate technical skills are being developed and departmental, project, and customer needs are satisfied.

 

You will support the overall team to ensure on time project delivery with the highest quality according to the PE Organization overall System Engineering Management Process (SEMP). This includes, but not limited to, requirement analysis of customer contracts, functional analysis and decomposition resulting in an architecture description. You will also be able to ensure all projects within the office portfolio work against agreed upon baselines and progress to project completion with no technical non-conformance costs.

 

You will have the technical management leadership experience, but also have a project-oriented mentality to be able to work with schedules, plans and cost.  

 

Responsibilities

Technical

·        Guide system engineering activities as well as develop technical skills within the PE-SYS OF portfolio to ensure portfolio, project, and customer needs are satisfied

·        Ensure system engineering technical processes, procedures and best practices are established, documented and effectively followed in (governed) daily system engineering activities

·        Ensure compliance with all applicable organizational processes (e.g., SEMP) by all Office portfolio projects and engineers

·        Use problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills to ensure effective and efficient team operation

·        Ensure effective project plans are created and successfully executed

·        Collaborate with the Head of Systems Engineering to continuously improve overall system engineering process

·        Develop the technical estimate for all Office Portfolio bids in collaboration with the bid team and Office RBM

·        Regularly report on Office portfolio projects status to Head of Systems Engineering and other executives

Financial

·        Ensure all projects within the PE-SYS OF portfolio are compliant with budget and schedules

·        Identify capital needs for the PE-SYS OF portfolio to support development and maintenance of the overall system engineering capital budget

·        Collaborate with project System Managers in Project (SMiPs) & Commercial Project Managers (CPM) to understand project(s) resource needs and create overall team resource forecast

Personnel

·        Manage the day-to-day SMiPs working on Siemens Office solutions (e.g., Back Office Server, ATS, Passenger Announcement and Information System, Dispatching, Movement Planner, etc.)

·        Define, monitor and manage team’s performance through organizationally aligned targets

·        Define, monitor and manage team’s development through technical training, mentoring and coaching

·        Conduct performance reviews and recommended salary adjustments, progressions and promotions

·       Coach on processes and engineering skills with new hires and in developmental areas with others, as appropriate

·        Provide guidance on contacts within the Siemens organization

 

 

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

 

You should have:

·       BS degree in an appropriate engineering or science related field required, MS degree preferred

·       A minimum 10 years of experience in the Systems Engineering

·        Excellent understanding of System & Software architecture & design processes

·        Very good understanding of System & Software Engineering standards (e.g., IEEE-1220, IEEE 15288)

·        Excellent communication skills

·        Excellent leadership skills

·        ~20% travel depending on project and organizational needs
