Position Overview

The Assay Engineering Manager is part of the dedicated Point of Care (POC) Sustaining Engineering (SEN) team responsible for coordinating support activities for in vitro diagnostics (IVD) instruments, consumables, and accompanying eco-system products. The SEN team works closely with Service, Manufacturing, and Quality to drive corrective actions in response to field issues; coordinate platform enhancements; resolve manufacturing obsolescence or quality issues; implement cost reduction programs; and respond to new regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will bring balance to the role by being a technical expert, coach, and process leader.  They will be responsible for having an aligned agenda for the team that will manage project execution, build team capabilities, and consistently achieve business goals.  


  • Manage an on-site team of scientists and lab technicians with the potential for an expanded role that includes the management of off-site resources
  • Set mutual performance expectations with direct reports, monitor progress, recognize accomplishments, and support their development and project deliverables
  • Build team capabilities and capacity through coaching, training, and stretch assignments
  • Collaborate with peers in new product development to optimize processes and tools
  • Drive timely closure for all escalated assay-related field complaints and manufacturing issues
  • Provide lab compliance oversite and training for the Sustaining Engineering department
  • Coordinate materials, resources, data analysis, and documentation for project activities
  • Ensure potential impacts on assay performance resulting from design changes are assessed
  • Set quality standards and regularly review team’s deliverables
  • Cultivate cross-functional relationships and networks to achieve business targets
  • Provide team resource plans and budget inputs required to support project demands
  • Represent R&D on the design change review board
  • Interact directly with customers as requested by Service and Marketing
  • Up-to 10% travel - some international.

Desired Education, Experience, and Knowledge/Skills

  • MS in chemistry, analytical chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 10 years’ applicable industry experience and 3+ years of management experience
  • Strong fundamental scientific background
  • Proven track record in developing and growing direct reports
  • Excellent quantitative skills and demonstrated application of complex experimental and statistical methods
  • Skilled in systems thinking
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, multi-functional organization with competing priorities
  • Experience in a regulated industry required; FDA preferred
  • Strong verbal, written communications, and interpersonal skills
  • Proactive and forward-thinking, rather than reactive
  • Problem solving, attention to detail and follow-up
