Your Master Thesis – challenging and future-oriented

  • A widely tunable Quantum Cascade laser shall be used in a spectroscopic setup for absorption spectroscopy in the wavelength range between 6 and 11 µm for oil samples
  • The objective is to prepare the technology for use cases where conventional spectrometers like FTIR- fail for different reasons
  • The thesis comprises the design and installation of the measurement setup, performance characterization and the measurement of a set of oil samples. Parts of the setup are already available
  • By measuring the samples with the laser-spectrometer and the FTIR the performance of both technologies shall be compared
  • Objectives for the measurement of the oil samples is the discrimination of different types of oil and quantitative determination of additives/contaminations in the sample e.g. water in oil. The spectroscopic data shall be analyzed. Support for advanced data analysis (chemometric methods) is available.
  • Optionally the contamination of surfaces with oil, water and other substances can be investigated in reflective configuration using the laser for the illumination of the scene and an IR-camera to retrieve spectrally resolved images (Hyperspectral Imaging). This setup allows to show the capabilities of the technology for identifying and locating substances on surfaces.

Your qualifications – solid and appropriate

  • Join our team if you are a student in Physics with focus on optics or Electrical Engineering with focus on optical sensing or similar field of study
  • You are our Future Maker, if you like experimental work
  • Show us your experience in programming with Matlab and/or LabView
  • Shine with your fluent English and furthermore German skills (is an additional plus) – and send us your CV!
