Job Description

Believe there’s more than one way to secure a successful future?

So do we. We think our three-year Traction and Rolling Stock Maintenance Apprenticeship programme is the best alternative to university for ambitious students, with an eye for engineering. Especially as you’ll gain professional qualifications and the reputation that comes with working for a prestigious engineering brand like Siemens.

This is a rare opportunity to earn money while showing your potential to a global innovator. Here at Siemens we build a better world using greener energy, cutting-edge software and ingenious inventions.

Siemens is a global technology and engineering powerhouse, committed to developing and producing the most advanced and innovative engineering technologies. The impact we make – from rail systems and renewable energy, to factory automation and medical imaging technology – shapes industries, cities and countries.

Siemens Rolling Stock is the leading passenger train maintainer in the UK, looking after over 1600 vehicles for customers like Heathrow Express, London Northwestern Railway, and South Western Railway.

The challenge

In the workplace, you will be part of a busy production team preparing trains for service, completing routine maintenance, and carrying-out fault finding.  You will also visit other depots, departments, customers, and suppliers nationally, and take part in team-building days, volunteering events, and learner forums.

As an apprentice, you will receive first-rate training and tuition from Siemens, the National Training Academy for Rail (NTAR), and CONEL College (Enfield Campus).

Year 1: You will spend the first year studying foundation and general engineering at CONEL College (Enfield Campus), working towards your technical competence.

During the summer, you will return to your local depot to meet your line manager and team, and complete new starter training to develop the business-specific skills and knowledge and ensure you are safe onsite, and develop your occupational and professional competencies.

Year 2: You’ll attend college for one day a week and spend the rest of your time as part of a busy production team preparing trains for service, completing routine maintenance, and carrying-out fault finding.  You’ll complete a workplace development plan made up of coaching, placements, and projects, and undertake residential technical courses at NTAR.

Year 3: You’ll spend your third year continuing to develop and demonstrate technical, occupational, and professional competence, as you prepare for a role as a Traction and Rolling Stock Maintenance Technician.

You will earn a full-time salary through-out the programme and be eligible for yearly pay review.

You will also have the opportunity to visit other depots, departments, customers, and suppliers nationally, socialise with learners from across the country, and take part in team-building activities, community engagement events, and learner voice forums.
