Development Support Intern – Computational Fluid Dynamics

Duration; This position is expected to last at least 8 weeks during the summer of 2019.

Position Overview:

In the world of engineering simulation, a common theme connecting industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, energy and many others, is the numerical solver and turbulence modelling. A CFD solver combined with appropriate turbulence models form a backbone for nearly all industrial simulations. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses

of particular computational setups is critical for efficient

engineering analyses.

STAR-CCM+ is a world leading CFD code, with state-of-the-art physical

modelling tools that are constantly enhanced by highly experienced

software development teams.  The Development Support team helps test

and verify these advanced CFD modelling tools and continuously provides

feedback during the software development cycle.

The intern will work with industrial and academic test cases to help

test and verify STAR-CCM+.  The intern will create and run simulations

under guidance from CFD Development-Support engineers and document the

performance, limitations and possible future enhancements of these

modelling tools.  These test cases will added to an online database to

be used by CFD R&D engineers to enhance the support andtesting of


This position is in the Development Support team, within the Product

Research and Development organization and based in the London office of

Siemens PLM Software


The specific responsibilities associated with the position include:

• Reorganizing the existing archive of test cases directories and

repurposing cases

• Testing advanced numerical modelling tools in STAR-CCM+ on

representative industrial and academic test cases from the aerospace,

automotive and energy sectors.

• Creating realistic test cases for RANS, LES and DES simulations based

on available experimental data.

• Creating an organized, searchable and online database of simulation

test cases collected by engineers at Siemens PLM Software.

• Determining limitations and documenting user-experiences of modelling

tools in STAR-CCM+.
