Head of IP – Siemens UK

Location – Frimley, Surrey


We are seeking an experienced and qualified Head of IP, who with an entrepreneurial approach will advance the business goals of Siemens and manage the Company's Intellectual Property and reputation for integrity. As a leader for a best in class IP team and trusted advisor to the business, you will devise and implement effective and robust IP strategies for several UK businesses.

The Challenge

  • Show effective leadership by
    • exploiting the opportunities IP law provides
    • taking the initiative and contributing proactively to master the business challenges
    • taking decisions in IP legal matters and assuming responsibility for them. Anticipating and managing IP risks and thinking and acting IP entrepreneurially
    • being a trusted advisor to management also beyond IP legal matters (strategic & operative topics)
    • effectively defining and implementing IP strategies, processes and policies (in accordance with country specific requirements)
    • leading a best-in-class IP team and interfacing with an internationally renowned industrial IP organisation worldwide    
  • Drive Protection, Defense and Exploitation of technological advancements and innovations; Develop Defense Strategies and Countermeasures regarding third party IP, exert IP Guidance / Counseling on IP law topics; consultancy at expert level
  • Be part of the business (process) and increase IP legal impact by
    • proactively providing value-added IP legal and business advice,
    • ensuring regular interaction with or within the Executive Management (e.g. Division Committee),
    • Implementing Division / BU IP Strategy in alignment with business strategy, including the search for technology fields that are most promising for innovation
    • Ensuring freedom of operation for own products and services
    • actively prosecuting IP for Siemens clients and draft patent applications
    • Product clearings to ensure collision free design of future products and countermeasures
    • Trusted advisor for any Technology License Agreements and Licensing In and Out
    • Trusted advisor for any IPR related issues including IP issues that need evaluation of an economic side
    • IP related support of mergers, acquisitions and divestitures - IP and asset evaluation (own and third party)
    • Enforcement and Defense in respect to IP related legal actions
  • Successfully manage IP team by:
    • creating a team atmosphere and mission for the team,
    • identifying, hiring and developing high potentials,
    • supporting employees to grow to their full potential,
    • creating appropriate objectives and managing performance


  • High level of knowledge of national and international Patent Law (in particular  UK and European), national and international Inventor's Law as well as general Law (e.g. civil code, contract law)
  • Many years of experience in all IP activities; negotiation skills, experience in mediation, national and international litigation, valuation of IP, licensing in and out, M&A, due diligence
  • Masters degree in an appropriate technical field and qualification as national and/or European Patent Attorney
  • Work experience in a relevant  technology/engineering field
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with a collaborative and entrepreneurial approach
